Tassie Wilmot Enduro

Well with under a week to drive back from Coolum and get the bikes ready for our last Enduro, it was fair to say we were a little pushed for time. After the last two months being on the road I think we are kind of getting used to it.

As we arrived at Wilmot and hopped out of the car I soon knew I should of repacked my gear bag for Tassie conditions and not Coolum. Instead of 27 degrees we had about 10 and some high winds.

With this our last Enduro for the year we ran a new format which was two different tracks. We did 3 laps of the first track (about 20 minutes a lap) which a break in between & then 3 laps of the second track. These were scored as separate races with the point's tallied together at the end - this meant you could have a really good day or bad.

Race 1 we decided to have a peg draw to decide our starting positions - which I pulled number 6 out and Clinton (my brother) pulled out number 2. Each person started with a 10 second gap between each rider.

Starting back behind some riders was something different and fun but by the end of the first lap I found myself in first with Clinton tagging on behind in second. Half way through the second lap I lost Clinton and continued on with my pace but struggling a little with no rear brakes because of a bend rear disc. Still pushing hard I finished the first race 1 minute in front of Clinton.

Race 2 was back to having Clinton only 10 seconds behind off the start. I pushed hard from the start and had about 1 minute lead but also a flat front tyre. With a quick tyre change and my brother now in front by 1-2 minutes it forced me to ride harder than normal but it's just what you have to do when your brother is in front. With ½ a lap to go I passed Clinton and continued on to take out race two as well.

This weekend capped off my best ever Enduro Season (made even better by having Clinton riding as well) with a clean sweep winning every race for the year and Clinton taking second.

I'd really like to thank all my pit helpers for the day - Linc, Thalia, Phil & Heath.

Bakers Beach Enduro

After a long week getting the bike prepared for endure riding and battling a chest infection, Clint & I packed up the trailer and headed to Backers Beach for the last 2 hour enduro for the year.

After a bit of light rain overnight it was a sunny day at the track and as predicted it was perfect conditions for the race. I adjusted my suspension and tyre pressures knowing the track is very rocky and rooty. After a quick riders briefing we all lined up and because I was the series leader I left first. Knowing the track was quite rough and unforgiving I set off on the first lap pretty conservative.

After the first half a lap Clint had caught up and I instantly picked the pace up which was the kick I needed. I came through the pits after the first lap with a nice lead.

With the next two laps drama free and me getting into an awesome rhythm I had built a nice lead and pulled into the pits for fuel. With a quick refuel from dad and a goggle change from Linc I was back on the track for the final two laps.

At this stage I was feeling great on the DS450xmx and still had a good lead but knowing my brother was behind I knew I had to keep pushing. With the bike set up so well my final two laps where the quickest and I came home with the win.

Great outcome for Can-am X Team once again with a one, two. Special thanks to Dad (John Sheridan) & Lincoln Bird for their help during the day with lap times, gap times, drinks and goggle changes.

2011 ATV MX Nationals

Coolum Pines - Queensland - 1st & 2nd October

After 2 days of traveling and severe weather changes, Clinton and I arrived at Coolum Beach on Thursday prior to racing. This left us with plenty of time for set up and also time to get used to the hot weather - which was for sure a shock being from Tassie.

An early wake up on Friday thanks to a few alarm clocks in the tree above. This gave us a good start on our set up which didn't take long with Rob, Trudy, Harry & Cooper helping & supply the tents - the area was set up by lunch time. With set up all done we all headed into town for some lunch and relax while taking in the sites of Coolum.

Saturday morning saw us up nice and early again for sign in & scrutineering. Being excited about the race but nervous at the same time about how we would go being so fresh into the MX scene and also the quality of the fields.

Heat 1
With the gates full and a long start straight I knew starts would be difficult but with a nice wide first corner I thought I could come out in a good position. This theory worked perfect and came out towards the front but coming into the next corner I go tangled with Luke Gaisford which saw both of us loosing time while separating the bikes. After settling into a good pace and making some good moves which saw me fighting back to 9th by the end of the heat.

Heat 2
With another wide open start and through the first corner I found myself in a good position. This allowed me to make a couple of passes and finish the moto strong in 6th. I found myself getting more comfortable with the track as it because rougher.

RACE DAY TWO

Heat 3 & 4
Both these heats I managed good starts which allowed me to settle into position and push hard for the full race. With my fitness good I managed to outlast a couple & make late passes which put me in a good position for the last race.

Heat 5
Saw my worse start but needing a good result I pushed hard and by mid race had made some good passes. With Jake in front I went for the inside, hitting a rut hard which knocked out my kill switch and losing two spots. Frustrated I finished the race faster than I started and on the last lap got back passed Jake and was stoked with my result.

Overall for the weekend I was stoked with my results and with the DS450xmx not missing a beat all weekend. I managed to place 6th overall and only 4 points behind my team mate Mitch in 5th .

I'd like to thank my mate and local Tassie rider Mick Smith who loaned us his van & also Tiny & Dad for all their support during the weekend. Also to all my sponsors for making the weekend possible and a lot easier.

2011 Victorian ATV Motocross Titles

A couple of days back in Tassie after the SA Title I was back on the phone so i could compete in the Yamaha Victorian Titles. It was a last minute decision to make the trip but an awesome opportunity to race with my Can-am X-Team team mates and get some experience with 15 minute moto's before the Aus Nationals.

Off the plane in Melbourne we travelled the 3.5 hours to Horsham to have a quick look at the track (in the dark)ready for the next days racing.

Getting to the track early helped so I had time to talk to my team mates to pick up some pointers on the best way to handle the jumps. After a good practice session where i got familiar with the jumps and ripped track it was time to race.

Race 1
The gates dropped and i got off to a solid start finding myself in behind Cam Wade. After changing positions a couple of times I settled into a rhythm and finished the race in 5th.

Race 2
Another decent start landed me fifth after the first corner but by the end of the first lap I managed to pass Cam Wade and tag onto my team mate Jake Van Vliet. Mid race i noticed Jake slowing down with some kind of issue. Jake indicated for me to pass and i held the third position to the end of the moto.

Race 3
Was much the same story as the second but this time team mate Mitch Van Vliet had blown a hose on his rear shock. For the full 15 minutes I had Cam pushing hard but kept a solid 8 seconds between us finishing third.

Race 4
The previous moto's started to take a toll on me more so than normal due to struggling with a cold. I pushed the whole moto hard and kept in touch with the front runners finishing 5th.

Race 5
I found myself in the same position as the race before but like always I still pushed hard to keep within sight of the front runners. Even though my sniffily body didn't want to play the game I managed fifth again.

Overall I was stoked with my effects, getting stronger at MX with every race I entered and getting more and more comfortable on the DS450-XMX. I look forward to competing in the Aus Nationals coming up soon, hopefully without the flu this time.

2011 SA ATV Motocross Titles

After some negotiations with Mick and Bullet, Clinton and I decided to fly to SA, jump onto a couple borrowed DS450xmx's and put our enduro skills to the test for the first time on a MX track

We were both lucky enough to have this opportunity and also to have Bullet & Lisa spend an afternoon with us on their track where we picked up some much needed jump time. We also picked up some awesome and much needed technique tips from them also.

Race day arrived and we were off to the track which was prepared absolutely awesome. We were at the track nice and early so we could walk the track with Bullet and talk about some race lines.

Race 1
I pulled the hole shot straight up and found that the track flowed really well and suited my style perfectly. Over the 12 minutes I worked on my race lead and came away with the race win.

Race 2 & 3
Was a similar story as race one and I found myself getting very comfortable with the track and loving every lap I had done. With such a good result on day one having three wins, I felt better and more fit than I did at the start and pumped ready for the last two moto's on day two.

Race 4 & 5
I grabbed another two hole shots and feeling so comfortable with the track and bike managed another two race wins -making it 5 straight wins from 5 starts.

This result was better than I ever expected and I can only put it down to the training I had from Bullet & Lisa on Friday. Also the DS450XMX is such an easy bike to hop on, ride fast and feel very comfortable in the air.

Also a big thank you goes to Mick & Tiff for accommodating us for two nights at the Shack and feeding us.

I would really like to thank my sponsors that made it possible for me to take the SA MX Title in Open Class:- BRP Australia, Can-Am , 47industries, Austraco, Quad Squad, CRC, Sidchrome, Wyllie Tiles, Dannebrog Cafe, Oddy, Kitten Car Care, Fox, Sheridan Construction & Fit 4 Life.

Rocky Cape Grass Track

Race day arrived and as usually we were off at some ungodly hour to the track. Never let it said that we ever arrive late - always at the track well before anyone else, set up and ready to go. This day was a little different with a new Can-Am DS450 XMX with very little ride time achieved prior to race day - well actually approx. 2 hours. A few changes needed to help protect the cooling system from the mud that lay ahead.

Heat 1 - the track was more a like a track for "drifting" than racing. Off to a good start and it was all about trying to be the first into the corner. Lucky being in front I didn't get filled in and just did my best to get across the line first. Happy with 1st place & now time to clean the bike ready for the next heat.

Heat 2 - not off to a good start and had to settle into second place after the first corner. With a very muddy track passing was difficult in the conditions and I had to work hard and pick the right time to try and pass. Swapping from trying to go round the outside to trying to go underneath I finally got my chance and took it. Crossing the line in 1st place again but needing to change some wheels ready for the next heat.

Heat 3 - With the smaller wheels on and hoping for a little more stability I was off to another great start. Once in front I just held on choosing the best lines and bringing my machine over the line for another 1st Place.

Absolutely thrilled with the outcome for the day - couldn't ask for a better result for Can-Am - 1st & 2nd, with my brother taking out the second place. The pressure was always on becuse the local newspapers had reported about us being on a new machine. Also had the other competitors watching to see how we were going to go.

Thanks to all my sponsors for their support - Can-Am X Team , Sheridan Construction, Fit 4 Life & CRC (that mud just slid off the bikes ) .
