2012 Monster Energy MX/ATV Nationals round 2- Wanneroo WA -Jake Van Vliet
Well it was off to a great start for the weekend flying in to Perth to see some great weather. We left Melbourne early friday morning arriving in Perth at about 10am, It was great to have my pit crew (Tash) along my side for the trip to help me with all my preparations. We hired a car and headed on down to the track with a quick stop in at the quad parts shop to say hello. When we arrived at the track it was great to see all of the factory teams already set-up and looking the part. Once the bus arrived which was on a epic journey from Melbourne, it was time to set-up. I had the Can-Am and CRC flags flying, with a great bit of exposure for my other sponsors. Once I was set-up I was off to check out the track and see what I was up for, basically sand, sand and more sand. It was like looking at a beach. The track was smooth, but that defiantly wasn't going to last long. Ill take you through each race.
Practice and qualifying-
I was off to a great start and it was awesome to be the first practice out, the track was still perfectly groomed, I did a few sighting laps just to see what it was all about, there was a large table top near the end off the track that you pretty much hit full throttle, which was great for the crowd. I started my qualifying times and put in a couple of decent laps, pushing the bike and myself to the limit and I managed to qualify in 5th position.
Race 1-
In the first race I had a pretty reasonable start coming into the first corner about mid pack, the track was fairly rough already only after having 2 classes through it, I pushed through the pack, and managed to make some nice passes and ended up In 5th
Race 2-
In race 2 the sun was out and it was starting to get fairly hot out, I kept my fluids up and was feeling pretty fresh, the 30 second board went up and it was time to race once again, I had a shocking start in this race,I was near last in the pack into the first corner, I was pretty disappointed with my efforts in the starts, I just couldn't get the knack of the sand, just as well they were long motos, it gave me a chance to regain myself to pull through the pack to get a nice 6th position.
Race 3-
This was the last moto of the Saturday, the sun was really shining now!, once again I had a poor start but managed to sneak up the inside in the first corner and that put me about mid pack, I had a bit of a rough race, the track was completely destroyed by this stage, it was kind of like a short thumb pump lap, I had a few near scares, and finished in 8th position race three.
Race 4-
The last race was held early Sunday morning, it was good that it was early because it was not hot yet, it was great that I qualified in 5th because I had a great gate pick, in the last race a I had a reasonable start and was about mid pack, I managed to make up about 4 positions in the first couple of laps witch brought me into 7th position about mid race, I managed to catch fellow racers Jy Stokes and Mitch van vliet and get by them for 5th position, within a lap I was up in the front pack with Jordan Dummett and Daniel Middleton, I was feeling very strong and ready to make some more passes, I was about to make a pass on Jordan Dummett for 4th but clipped a sharp edge and rolled over, and unfortunately my bike stalled and melted a start wire which made me unable to start my bike. A couple of laps went by and I managed to get it started but unfortunately finished in last position.
Overall for the day- 7th
Overall series- 8th
At the 3rd Round being the Australian Titles at Maffra/Sale, Victoria, I am aiming to regain some points and get on that podium.
