Colin Lawson
Lawson started off in the Australian X Race team in 2008 as a team mechanic for Bullet Knight in the Australasian Safari.
2009 saw Lawson as the newest member in the off road team, specializing in enduros - his mechanical background proved to be a distinct advantage in these types of events, where men and machines are pushed to their limits.
Born and bred in Far North Queensland, Lawson is no stranger to Quads, when he's not racing he can often be found on his family's 26000 acre property mustering cattle in Central Queensland.
AS the owner operator of Extreme Motorcycles in Atherton, his passion for quads is obvious. Extreme Motorcycles specialize in quads given the geography of the area. The Atherton Tablelands is a farming area with Dairy, Cropping and Grazing all within the close proximity. As a quad specialist Lawson keeps his finger on the pulse with all Can-am's latest innovations and works closely with the BRP team to get the best possible results for the teams Renegades and Outlanders.
Pre-Season training has been adventurous for Colin. Along with the usual gym and ride time he has been "mixing it up" with different activities. The GTX 255hp Seadoo has proven to be a hard task master in choppy North Queensland waters. The large swell makes for an excellent substitute for sand whoops in Finke Desert training. He has also resenting summated Queensland tallest mountain "Mt Bartle Frere".
This year will be a busy year for Lawson. Starting with the prestigious "Thump Pump 300" over the Easter break. Lawson will be entering in the Teams event with Bullet. He will also be entering High Beam 100 night race and try to improve on his last years result of 3rd place.
The weekend straight after thump pump is Kamfari; Darwin's biggest event for the year. Kamfari is a 4 hr enduro through crocodile infested swamp. For this event Lawson will be riding BRP's 800 MR (Mud Rally). This machine is a production mud racing bike. Built by BRP with mud flinging horse power in mind. It is an 800 Max platform with snorkels, 14" wheels, Mudzilla Tyres, Gorilla Axls, raised radiator, air suspension, power steering, this machine is built for swamps.
June long weekend is the grueling Finke Desert Race. The big renegade will be prepped and lightened for grueling sand whoops. Lawson' last year's efforts were hindered by a blown drive belt at the 100klm mark losing 10-12 minutes on the side of the track. The Finke Desert race is a sprint race/enduro. Starting off at Alice Springs then racing 240klms down to Finke Aboriginal Community. Riders stay in Finke for the night then line up the next morning for the race home; 480klm all up with approximately 160klm of sand whoops up to 1 meter deep. This race is not for the feint hearted.
On the 23rd of September Lawson will be on the start line of Australia's longest race, "The Australasian Safari". This event is held over 7 days and covers over 3000klms of Western Australia's wilderness. This event will be Lawson's main focus for the year and once again will be riding a Renegade 800XXC.
It is going to be a big year of Quad racing so keep your eye out on this page for Lawson's video-race-reports.
